ABOUT THE BCUA
History of the BCUA
The Barbados Cricket Umpire Association was formed in 1953 out of a desire to bring some formal structure to what was then considered to be a labour of love for the sport by those who previously played the game or simply had a love for the game and had to turn to Match Officiating by way of umpiring.
The first President of the newly formed BCUA was H. Cortez Jordan, and the first secretary was Charles Collymore.
From those early days the BCUA has grown from strength to strength and has provided the world stage with some outstanding umpires who officiated at the International level.

Since then the ICC established The International Panel of ICC Umpires Gregory Brathwaite has been the first of our members to be elevated to this Panel. He has so far stood in 8 Test Matches, 56 ODI (currently the most by any Barbadian) and 47 T20I matches. He’s also stood in 133 T20 League matches. To his list of achievements he has stood onfield in the ICCWWC Final at Lords, England in 2017 and the ICCU19WC Final in New Zealand in 2019.

Leslie Reifer (Jnr) has also been elevated to the ICC International Panel of umpires and has over the last seven years made his mark on the International scene. The Association expects a long and successful career for him having had an early start. He has so far stood in 24 ODI and 32 T20I matches. He has also stood in 94 T20 League matches.

The late Halley Moore who would not have had the good fortune of being on field for an International match is worthy of mention under International matches as he was TV Umpire in 6 Test matches and 9 ODI matches.
The BCUA has also produced a number of First Class umpires over the years, these include Halley Moore, Vincent Bullen, Anthony “Indian” Farrell, Patrick Grazette, Mervyn Jones, Tunley Franklyn, Andrew Corbin, Ricardo Brathwaite and more recently Johnathan Blades.
The BCUA works very closely with the Barbados Cricket Association providing umpires for all of its competitions as well as for several privately organized tournaments. The umpires of the BCUA are in the field twelve months a year as a result of the various tournaments and competitions played throughout the year.
Some of the past Presidents have been Lloyd Barker, The late Stanton Parris, Andrew Corbin, Mervyn Jones and Vincent Bullen. Some of these gentlemen still serve on the Executive of the BCUA.
The current President is Gregory Brathwaite who is currently a member of the International Panel of ICC Umpires (IPU) and has been serving in this capacity from June 2013 until present.
The BCUA has a membership of approximately 142 members and 2 Honorary Life Members.
